When I was persecuted by the publications manager, and got no help from my managers, I turned to exploring software for a graphical system and learned from over 1000 open source code bases what they are in general and why they die out on the vine, after some heroic efforts from the coders that give up.

That's where I learned to quickly download a code base and get things working to see what it had or in most cases was a disappointment.
