Hey everyone, it’s Leaflit! In today’s video, I’m reacting to Decoy Voice’s exposé “Mexico Just Went Off…”, which shows the recent wave of anger in Mexico City—violent protests, storefront destruction, and chants like “Gr*ng* go home” erupting in gentrifying neighborhoods like Condesa and Roma. Mexican citizens are fed up with skyrocketing rents and seeing travelers, remote workers, and expats blamed for taking over their communities.

I break down what’s happening:

The protest kicked off peacefully but quickly turned aggressive—with looting and threats aimed at foreigners and American businesses like Starbucks.

The anger isn't just xenophobia—it’s rooted in rising housing prices and displacement fueled by Airbnb and tourism.

But targeting individuals—especially based on nationality—is dangerous, fuelling division and chaos.

In this video, I address the deeper causes, why the backlash is real—but also why the reactions go too far. We need solutions, not violence. Stick with me as we walk through the facts, community concerns, and why peaceful, structured reform is the only sustainable path forward.

Hundreds protested in Mexico City on July 4, targeting Condesa and Roma—areas transformed by American remote workers since 2020, now with skyrocketing rents and Airbnb saturation.

Initial peaceful demonstrations escalated: storefronts were smashed, Starbucks and cafes looted, and chants like “Gr*ng* go home” and “Get out of Mexico” filled the streets.

Protesters demand stronger housing policies, rent control, and limits on short-term rentals—blaming government and tourism agreements for displacement.

While President Sheinbaum called the xenophobic messaging unacceptable, she acknowledged underlying economic pressures and called for structural solutions.

Real grievances – Rapid gentrification and inflation are hurting locals; their frustration is understandable.

Crossing the line – Turning to violence and xenophobic rhetoric undermines constructive reform.

Policy over protest – Emphasizing rent regulation and touristic zoning can create sustainable solutions.
