Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces kill 40 people in North Darfur displacement camp attack

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the famine-stricken Abu Shouk displacement camp near el-Fasher on Monday, killing 40 people and injuring at least 19, according to local rights groups.

The camp, home to 450,000 displaced people, has faced repeated assaults during the RSF’s war with the Sudanese military.

Satellite imagery and eyewitness reports indicate RSF fighters targeted civilians in their homes, used ethnic slurs, and blocked escape routes.

The broader conflict, ongoing since April 2023, has killed over 40,000, displaced 12 million, and driven many to famine, the Associated Press has reported.

The U.N. warns conditions in el-Fasher are catastrophic, with over 60 malnutrition deaths—mostly women and children—in the past week.
