South Korea’s former first lady arrested after court issues warrant on corruption charges

Former South Korean first lady Kim Keon Hee, wife of impeached ex-president Yoon Suk Yeol, has been arrested on corruption charges, making the couple both in custody.

A Seoul court issued the warrant citing risk of evidence tampering.

Kim faces three charges: manipulating stock prices to gain over 800 million won, accepting 270 million won in illegal political funding, and receiving luxury gifts linked to development favors.

She denies all allegations.

The probe, led by a special counsel appointed after President Lee Jae Myung’s election, is part of a wider investigation into 16 criminal allegations against her, The Guardian has reported.

Kim will be held separately from her husband, who was detained in July over a failed martial law attempt.
