Driver (1999), the first game in the series developed by Reflections Interactive and published by GT Interactive, was released for PlayStation on June 25, 1999. The game is inspired by car chases in movies, most notably The Driver (1978). The game takes place in four real-life cities (Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York) using a variety of vehicles. The plot focuses on the work of John Tanner, an undercover police officer who infiltrates a criminal organization, only to uncover a plot by his boss to assassinate the president.
