In this episode of Along the Rock, host Kaitlyn Blum talks with Ben Lightner about Dixon Stage Left’s “Shakespeare and the Summer Sun” production of Julius Caesar. This special one-hour adaptation brought the political intrigue, betrayal, and aftermath of Caesar’s assassination to life on Sauk Valley Community College’s outdoor stage.

Ben shared what made this version unique, the real-world relevance of the story, and the inspiration he took from a Dallas production. Audiences also enjoyed a lively pre-show featuring fire juggling, madrigal singers from Chicago, and a live sword-fighting demonstration.

Performances took place August 16–17, 2025, with the goal of making Shakespeare accessible for newcomers and engaging for seasoned theater fans. Ben also hinted that “Shakespeare and the Summer Sun” will return annually, alternating between drama and comedy.
