Is this the end for my summer Phalaenopsis orchids? Get ready for a rare and emotional video from the patio. I'm saying goodbye to some beloved plants and sharing a transparent look at the harsh realities of orchid growing in my challenging climate. But stick around, because in the midst of this sadness, I've witnessed a true orchid miracle that I have to show you!
First, we'll say farewell to a beautiful group of Phalaenopsis that have sadly left the collection, including:
Phalaenopsis 'Tabasco Tex' – A frustrating orchid rescue that ultimately failed due to a lack of proper conditions.
Phalaenopsis 'Sweet Memory' – A promising keiki that fell victim to fatal orchid stem rot just before its time to shine.
Phalaenopsis 'Cornu Cervi variety Chattaladae' – My special "Orchid Ninja" plant with its smiling blooms, now struggling in water culture after a complete desiccation of its spikes.
Vandaenopsis Irene Dobkins – A constant battle with scale on orchids has led to another move into water culture in a last-ditch attempt to save her.
It's a tough video, but I also have an update on some struggling survivors. See how my Phalaenopsis 'Yins Black Eagle' and 'Pingtung Bronze Age' are still holding on. I'm using a special regimen of calcium nitrate and Epsom salts to boost their strength for the coming winter. I'll explain why this orchid fertilizer is so critical for their survival!
But the real highlight—and a much-needed moment of hope—comes from my KTC Khaokitchakut x corningiana. I'll show you something I have NEVER seen before in my years of orchid care: a viable growth from a desiccated flower stem! This is the rarest of sights and a truly unbelievable orchid comeback that has restored my faith.
