What Does Islam Say About Breaking Treaties?
Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 136th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe, What Does Islam Say About Breaking Treaties?
Islam places great emphasis on **fulfilling treaties and agreements, considering them a matter of both moral integrity and religious obligation. Treaties, covenants, and pacts are not merely political tools in Islam; they are solemn commitments that must be honored, as they reflect the truthfulness and reliability of the Muslim Ummah. However, Islam also acknowledges the reality of betrayal and deception from opponents and gives guidelines on how to respond when treaties are broken. This delicate balance between peace and justice is addressed in Surah Al-Anfal, verses 56–58, which focus on the conduct of disbelievers who repeatedly broke their treaties with the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Allah says in the Qur’an Surah Al-Anfal verse 56:
“Those with whom you made a treaty, then they break their pledge every time, and they do not fear Allah.”
This verse highlights the repeated betrayal by certain tribes and groups who had signed peace treaties with the Prophet ? but violated them without just cause. Notably, the Quraysh and some Jewish tribes in Madinah were among those who repeatedly broke their agreements. This verse reveals the pattern of treachery and lack of accountability that characterized these actions. Breaking treaties was not a one-time incident but a repeated violation, indicating a deliberate choice to deceive and harm the Muslim community.
The seriousness of this behavior is further emphasized in the next verse Surah Al-Anfal verse 57:
“So if you gain dominance over them in war, make them an example for those who come after them, that perhaps they will be reminded.”
Here, Allah commands the Muslims that if they find themselves in a position of strength over such treacherous groups, they should act decisively and make their punishment a deterrent for others who might consider betrayal. Islam does not permit ongoing injustice or turning a blind eye to treachery. However, this response must come only after clear evidence of repeated betrayal, and not as an act of aggression or revenge.
Yet, Islam also teaches that even when dealing with known treaty-breakers, Muslims must act with wisdom and integrity. The next verse 58 of Surah Al-Anfal provides an important guideline:
“And if you fear treachery from a people, then throw back their treaty to them \[in a way that is] fair. Indeed, Allah does not like the treacherous.”
This verse is crucial in outlining the Islamic principle of transparent withdrawal from a treaty. If there are clear signs that a treaty is about to be violated, Muslims are allowed to publicly announce that the treaty is no longer in effect. This maintains honesty and avoids treachery on the Muslim side. Islam strictly prohibits deception, even in the face of potential betrayal. The Prophet (PBUH) never broke a treaty first; he only responded when others violated their terms.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)'s life is filled with examples of fulfilling treaties, even under difficult circumstances. A prominent instance is the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, in which the Prophet agreed to terms that appeared unfavorable to the Muslims for the sake of long-term peace. Even when the Quraysh violated the treaty by supporting the Banu Bakr tribe in attacking Banu Khuza'ah (an ally of the Muslims), the Prophet ? did not retaliate immediately. He gave them the chance to correct their mistake, but when they failed, it led to the Conquest of Makkah, a peaceful resolution to years of conflict.
The importance of honoring treaties is further reinforced in Hadith No 3188 of Sahih al-Bukhari. The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Every betrayer will have a flag on the Day of Judgment, and it will be said, ‘This is the betrayal of so-and-so.’”
This hadith illustrates the **gravity of betrayal in Islam**, and that such acts will not be hidden in the Hereafter. The traitor will be publicly exposed on the Day of Judgment.
In conclusion, Islam commands Muslims to honor treaties and uphold justice, as highlighted in Surah Al-Anfal verses 56–58. However, if others break their agreements repeatedly, Islam allows Muslims to respond firmly—but always with transparency, fairness, and without treachery. The example of the Prophet (PBUH) and the guidance of the Qur’an and Hadith make it clear that Islam promotes peace, but not at the cost of being deceived and dishonored repeatedly. Treachery is condemned in all its forms, and the Muslim Ummah is expected to rise above it through ethical strength and principled action.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
Allah Hafiz
