A deep pool of stillness

If you believe the small self is real, then you believe that there are many things that can intrude upon it, and you have to protect it from intrusions. You believe that each of these things that can intrude upon the small self are real, and therefore very difficult to change. You can see, then, how you would be very invested in protecting what you see as the separate peace of this small self--its separate territory where it seems to have its own peace, its own territory that it can protect.
