For nearly 3 million years, humans and our ancestors have crafted stone tools through percussion flaking, shaping sharp edges for survival. Now, a discovery in Sulawesi is pushing that story further back than ever before.

Professor Adam Brumm and his team uncovered stone tools that are more than 1 million years old—hundreds of thousands of years older than any previously found in the region. Using advanced dating methods, this breakthrough challenges existing ideas about human migration and evolution in Asia.

The find raises new questions. Which human species made these tools? Could there have been ancient migration routes connecting Sulawesi with other islands, home to unique species found nowhere else?

We celebrate Adam Brumm and his team for opening a new chapter in our understanding of early human history.
