The Tick S02 E03 - Armless But Not Harmless
With the passing of Charlie Kirk, we here at Hill 30 want to use our platform to help. In grief, we must remember that those we’ve lost would want us to carry on. One thing they wouldn’t want us to do is lose our ability to laugh. Charlie brought smiles to millions, cheer to those who needed them and laughter to millions with his comedic take on certain subjects that made those he debated even laugh along with him. Don’t forget to laugh. Laughter makes us remember we’re alive. Do it for Charlie. Never forget your laughter. And on that note…
Welcome back to Season 2 of The Tick Cartoon Enthusiastus Maximus, Headbangers, and Patriots! If you're GenX, this cartoon is like finding your old mixtape with all the hits; if you're not, well, prepare to have your childhood cartoons mocked mercilessly. The Tick turns whatever you thought was awesome into a sad, sad footnote on a used napkin! In this week’s episode: In the whimsical world of The Tick, the indomitable, blue-suited superhero strides through the absurd underbelly of The City, a sprawling metropolis teeming with eccentric villains and everyday chaos. Season 2, Episode 3, "Armless But Not Harmless," captures the show's signature blend of over-the-top action, satirical jabs at comic-book tropes, and heartfelt camaraderie between its leads: the nigh-invincible Tick, voiced with bombastic flair by Townsend Coleman, and his reluctant sidekick Arthur, an accountant-turned-moth-costumed everyman brought to life by Rob Paulsen.
This animated gem from 1995, directed by Hank Tucker, revels in the duo's dynamic as they navigate a city where heroism is as much about quips and quirky side characters as it is about battling bizarre threats, all underscored by a soundtrack of jaunty tunes and explosive sound effects that amplify the cartoonish energy. What sets this episode apart is its clever wordplay and visual gags, poking fun at the superhero genre's penchant for elaborate schemes and improbable henchmen, while weaving in themes of identity and partnership without ever taking itself too seriously. The supporting cast shines with memorable turns from villains like the seductive Venus and the dim-witted Milo, alongside cameos that nod to classic pop culture icons, creating a tapestry of humor that's equal parts slapstick and sly. Fans of the series will appreciate how it balances high-stakes antics with poignant moments of character growth, reminding viewers why The Tick endures as a cult favorite for its unapologetic embrace of the ridiculous and the heroic alike.
