Diego Chanca Tells of the Taino and Rescuing Them from the Caribs, on Columbus' 2nd Voyage

My name is Diego Álvarez Chanca, a physician from Seville trained in both classical medicine and the latest remedies from across Europe. In 1493, I was chosen to sail with Christopher Columbus on his second voyage, charged with keeping the crew healthy and recording the strange new plants and diseases we might encounter. The journey was long and harsh, but I treated fevers, infections, and injuries aboard ship. When we reached Hispaniola, I cared for both Spaniards and the Taino people, learning from their healers and sharing my own knowledge. News came that Carib raiders had attacked and taken Taino captives, and I joined the effort to rescue them. Many were wounded, starving, and frightened; I tended their injuries and nursed them back to strength. In letters home, I described the islands, their people, and the healing plants I discovered. Though I came as a doctor, I became a bridge between two worlds, caught between the promise of discovery and the harsh realities of conquest.
