French Prime Minister François Bayrou has described the massive and deadly wildfire sweeping through southern France as a "disaster of an unprecedented scale."

He visited the Aude region, where the most severe wildfires in 80 years have burned an area larger than the city of Paris. Bayrou linked the blaze to global warming and prolonged drought conditions.

So far, over 15,000 hectares of land have been destroyed, and 2,150 firefighters are currently battling the flames. Authorities have warned that the fire could continue to spread for several more days.

The wildfire began on Tuesday near the village of La Ribaute. Officials say it's the most extensive wildfire France has experienced since 1949.

This fire is part of a broader pattern of wildfires sweeping across Europe this summer. Climate experts warn that global warming is causing hotter and drier weather, which increases the risk of these destructive fires becoming more frequent.
