Genesis 1 describes the creation of the universe in a sequence of six days. The first four days are particularly intriguing from an astrophysics perspective because they raise fundamental questions about the nature of time, light, the Earth, and the cosmos. The Creation view conflicts on nearly all aspects of the scientific big bang view. What must be questioned is this, are there any plausible theories that can be scientifically and biblically verified, without ignoring observable facts?
Day 1: "Let there be light"
The Bible states that on the first day, God created the heavens and the Earth, and then said, “Let there be light.” This moment is often compared to the Big Bang theory, which posits that the universe began around 13.8 billion years ago from a singular point, followed by rapid expansion. The idea that light was one of the earliest creations mirrors the cosmic background radiation—residual light from the early universe. Some people believe, Genesis presents Earth as already formed before the sun or stars, which diverges from the scientific model where stars and galaxies precede planets. Which if either is most reasonable?
Day 2: The separation of waters
On the second day, God separates the "waters above" from the "waters below" and creates the "Firmament”. This has been interpreted by some scholars as an ancient cosmological model that views the universe as a flat Earth beneath a dome-like sky. Scientifically, this does not align with our current understanding of planetary atmospheres or the structure of the solar system. Others claim that this verse explains the development of the Earth’s atmosphere and the water cycle, but does that really fit when taking into account the entire creation text?
Day 3: Land and vegetation
God gathers the waters to let dry land appear and creates vegetation. Scientifically, in Earth’s geological record, many believe that plants evolved after billions of years of microbial life and after the formation of the sun. But, Genesis seems to state that plant life existed before the sun (Day 4), is that possible, or are we misinterpreting the Creation text?
Day 4: Sun, moon, and stars
Pop-science asserts that stars and galaxies formed long before planets. The sun is a prerequisite for Earth's orbit and energy system, making the idea of an eco-system on Earth before to the sun an unlikely scientific perspective. On the other side of the debate, some theologians believe the it only describes these bodies but as they appeared from an Earth's view, possibly due to atmospheric clearing. Yet, this seems to also fall short of clean theory without faults.
The first four days of Genesis, when examined through a scientific lens, present conceptual challenges. Depending upon which creation theory you examine, some interpretations cause many conflicts with modern astrophysics, geology, and biology. There are many people who view the Creation account little more than a fantasy story rather than a scientific account.
There are answers that satisfy both a modified scientific perspective and a modified creation perspective.
