What causes the downfall of powerful nations?

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 127th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe, What causes the downfall of powerful nations?

The downfall of powerful nations has long been a subject of deep reflection in Islamic teachings. The Qur’an and Sunnah consistently emphasize that the strength of a nation is not solely measured by its wealth, military power, or technological advancement, but by its moral compass, justice, and obedience to divine guidance. When these foundations are compromised, even the mightiest civilizations are destined to collapse.

In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah provides profound insight into the spiritual and moral reasons behind the rise and fall of nations. One of the key verses 53 states:

"That is because Allah would not change a favor which He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves."

This verse highlights that internal corruption, moral decay, and the abandonment of divine values are the primary reasons Allah removes His blessings from a nation. When people become arrogant, unjust, and rebellious against divine laws, they effectively invite their own downfall.

Another verse 46 from Surah Al-Anfal warns against the dangers of disunity and disobedience:

"And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient."

Here, Allah points to two specific causes of national weakness: disobedience to divine commands and internal division. When people turn away from their religious and moral responsibilities and engage in selfish disputes, their collective strength begins to crumble. This is especially true when leaders are driven by greed, pride, or the oppression of others.

History provides ample evidence of these principles. The mighty civilizations of ’Ad, Thamud, Pharaoh, and others are repeatedly mentioned in the Qur'an as examples of powerful nations destroyed due to arrogance and defiance. For instance:

(Surah Al-‘Ankabat verse 40)
"So We seized each [nation] for its sin; and among them were those upon whom We sent a storm of stones, and among them were those who were seized by the blast from the sky, and among them were those We caused the earth to swallow, and among them were those We drowned. And Allah would not have wronged them, but it was they who were wronging themselves."

This verse demonstrates that it was not Allah’s injustice that destroyed these civilizations, but their own evil deeds and refusal to reform.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also addressed the moral and legal corruption that leads to the collapse of nations. In a well-known hadith, Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6788 he said:

“The people before you were destroyed because they used to inflict legal punishments on the poor and forgive the rich. By Him in Whose hand my soul is, if Fatima (the daughter of Muhammad) stole, I would cut off her hand.”

This hadith emphasizes the danger of **injustice**, especially when laws are applied selectively. When the law favors the powerful and oppresses the weak, society loses its moral fabric, leading to its decline.

Another critical cause is **ingratitude** for divine blessings. When nations enjoy prosperity but fail to thank Allah or use their resources responsibly, their blessings are withdrawn:

(Surah An-Nahl, verse 112)

“And Allah sets forth a parable: A city enjoying security and provision, coming to it in abundance from every place, but it denied the favors of Allah. So Allah made it taste the envelopment of hunger and fear for what they used to do.”

In conclusion, the downfall of powerful nations is not merely a result of external threats, but is often the natural outcome of internal decay: injustice, moral corruption, disobedience to Allah, and arrogance. Surah Al-Anfal and other Qur’anic chapters offer clear guidance and historical examples, warning us that unless a nation remains committed to justice, unity, and spiritual integrity, its collapse is inevitable — regardless of its worldly strength.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz
