After the golden calf incident, God tells Moses to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land but declares He will not go with them lest He destroy them due to their sin. The people mourn this news and remove their ornaments. Moses pitches the Tent of Meeting outside the camp, where God speaks to him face-to-face, as a friend. Moses pleads for God's continued presence, insisting that without it, the journey is meaningless. God relents and promises His presence will go with them.
