My name is Erik Thorvaldsson, but most people know me as Erik the Red. That nickname came from my bright red hair—and, if I’m honest, probably my fiery temper too. I was born around the year 950 in Norway, but my life really began when my father was forced to leave our homeland. He’d killed a man, and we had no choice but to pack up and sail west to Iceland. Back then, if you made enemies or broke the law, exile was often the price.
Growing up in Iceland wasn’t easy. The land was beautiful but harsh—rocky ground, cold winds, long winters. Still, it was a place where people could start fresh. I married a strong woman named Thjodhild, and we tried to live a peaceful life. But, like my father, I got into a deadly fight. Some men challenged me and damaged my property, and I struck back. I ended up killing several of them. Once again, I was outlawed, this time from Iceland, for three years.
But I didn’t sit around and wait for my punishment to end. I had heard tales of a mysterious land far to the west, across the sea. Some called it useless, others said it was dangerous. I saw it as a chance. I sailed into the unknown with a small crew and found a place that was icy and wild—but livable. It had fjords, pasture, and fishing grounds. I called it Greenland, hoping that the name would attract settlers. Let’s be honest—it wasn’t that green, but good branding helps.
After my exile was up, I went back to Iceland and convinced others to follow me. We set out with twenty-five ships. Only fourteen made it through storms and icebergs. But we did it. We settled Greenland. I led the Eastern Settlement, and for a while, we built a strong community there. My son, Leif, grew up to become even more famous than me. He sailed further west and reached a place called Vinland, which many believe was part of North America—long before Columbus was born.
I never followed Leif to Vinland. I was supposed to go, but I fell off my horse on the way to the ship. To us, that was a bad omen, so I stayed behind. Maybe it was just fate telling me I’d already gone as far as I was meant to.
Looking back, my life was filled with risk, conflict, and discovery. I didn’t set out to become a legend. I just wanted to find a place where my family could survive and thrive. That place turned out to be on the edge of the known world. I wasn’t a king or a poet. I was a man who got kicked out of two countries and still built a colony in one of the most unforgiving places on Earth.
So if you remember anything about me, remember this—when one door slams shut, there might be another one open across the sea. You just have to be bold enough to sail there.
