The US-India relationship is getting bumpy

The U.S.-India relationship, while strong in many areas like defense, technology, and trade, has recently faced tensions due to serious geopolitical and internal issues. A major cause of strain has been the alleged involvement of Indian officials in assassination plots targeting Sikh separatists abroad, including one foiled attempt in the U.S. and another in Canada. These incidents have led to diplomatic friction, with the U.S. expressing deep concern over violations of sovereignty and international norms. Additionally, American lawmakers have increasingly criticized India’s human rights record, especially regarding press freedom and the treatment of minorities, which India often sees as external interference in its internal affairs.

Another layer of tension comes from strategic and economic disagreements. India maintains close ties with Russia and has refused to condemn the Ukraine invasion, frustrating U.S. efforts to isolate Moscow. Trade frictions also persist, with the U.S. opposing some of India’s protectionist digital and market policies, while India resists U.S. dominance in its tech space. Despite these challenges, both nations continue to collaborate on defense initiatives and high-tech partnerships, recognizing the long-term value of their strategic alliance—especially in countering China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
