Testimonies to the unspeakable horror of the Holocaust, the images of the liberation of the camps are etched in the collective memory. But what about the three million Jews who perished on Soviet soil? On June 22, 1941, Hitler launched the Wehrmacht into an assault on the USSR, shattering the German-Soviet pact signed in August 1939. From the very beginning of the offensive, Stalin harnessed the power of images to pit the homeland against the invader. He dispatched camera operators such as Roman Karmen, Otilia Reisman, and Mark Troïanovski to the front. Armed with their small Eyemo cameras, they filmed the immense desolation of the territories trampled by the enemy. Begun at the end of 1941, the reconquest revealed the extent of the crime: in the wake of the Red Army, the operators discovered traces of mass executions perpetrated by the Einsatzgruppen – or mobile intervention groups –, with the collaboration of nationalists from the Baltic countries and Ukraine, contaminated by the theory of the "Judeo-Bolshevik plot". However, it was only by cross-referencing their images with those of the Germans that the specificity of the Jewish genocide became apparent. For Stalinist propaganda quickly set about erasing the Jewishness of the victims, universalizing martyrdom, to unite the people in the fight against the Third Reich .
