Smartmatic Exec Accused of Bribing Top Venezuelan Election Official

The Miami Herald reports that federal prosecutors in the Southern District of Florida have accused indicted Smartmatic executive Roger Peñate of bribing Juan Lucena Ramírez, the now-deceased president of Venezuela's National Electoral Council, by gifting her a house with a pool to secure election-related contracts.

This allegation adds to existing charges of bribery and money laundering in the Philippines, where four Smartmatic executives allegedly paid off a former elections chief for favorable business treatment.

Smartmatic, which launched under the Chávez regime, ceased operations in Venezuela in 2017 following widespread controversy over that year’s presidential election.

The case is part of a broader investigation into Smartmatic's global dealings. The trial is set to begin October 1 in the Southern District of Florida.
