On the 3rd of September 1978 Joshua Nkomo's ZIPRA forces shot down Air Rhodesia Flight 825 which had taken off from Kariba Airport for Salisbury. Despite the odds Captain John Hood managed to bring the aircraft down in a field and many lives, although not his, were saved. What happened next shocked the nation. ZIPRA forces arrived on the scene and began massacring the survivors of the crash, mostly women and children. Some, however, managed to make it out and brought the story to their fellow Rhodesians. As one the Whites of Rhodesian rose up as one and demanded revenge. Ian Smith, who had initially urged restraint, was left with no choice. The White man would no longer fight with his hands tied behind his back. It was time for revenge, this time in the form of Operation Gatling.
