Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution overthrew the U.S.-backed Shah, sparking hostility with the U.S. and alarming Iraq’s Saddam Hussein. Fearing Shia influence, Saddam invaded Iran in 1980 with U.S. backing, expecting a quick win. Instead, the war lasted eight years, killing about a million and causing regional instability. Both sides used militias and backed internal rebellions. The U.S. controversially aided Iraq while secretly selling arms to Iran (Iran-Contra).
