Benny Johnson says goodbye to Jasmine Crocket
In Texas, the political battle for control of electoral districts has taken a sharp turn that could spell the end of Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett’s career. Known for her confrontational style and openly radical positions, Crockett has long represented a district with a +30 Democratic margin in some of the most impoverished areas of Dallas. However, a newly approved redistricting map is now reshaping the political landscape, eliminating the comfortable advantage she has enjoyed for years.
This redistricting is not a whim, but a constitutional mandate to ensure that districts accurately reflect the state’s political and demographic reality. For politicians like Crockett, it means losing the security of a voter base where 90% rely on government assistance—a perfect scenario to maintain Democratic dominance with minimal electoral effort. Under the new map, that cushion disappears, throwing her political future into uncertainty.
The move has triggered outrage among Texas Democrats. In what many see as a boycott of democracy, several lawmakers fled the state to Illinois aboard a luxury jet worth $47 million, costing approximately $17,000 per flight hour. The Dallas-to-Chicago trip likely cost around $100,000, not including other expenses. The pressing question in Austin now is: who paid for this trip? Republicans have demanded an immediate investigation, and Governor Greg Abbott has responded by ordering a probe to uncover the funding source.
Democrats’ strategy was to break the quorum in the state legislature, preventing the redistricting vote. However, Attorney General Ken Paxton has warned that absent lawmakers could face arrest and has pledged to send the Texas Rangers to bring them back. The message is clear: Texas will not allow a minority group to block the legislative will of the state.
The governor’s order is explicit: Democratic lawmakers must return by 3:00 p.m. or be expelled from the House. This not only jeopardizes their seats but also delivers a direct blow to the Democratic Party’s strategy in Texas. If the Republican plan succeeds, the state will send fewer Democrats to Washington, strengthening the conservative bloc in Congress and weakening the progressive wing.
Jasmine Crockett’s case perfectly illustrates how redistricting can drastically alter the political landscape. For years, her rhetoric and style thrived in a homogenous, Democrat-loyal electorate. Now, with a more diverse voter base less dependent on welfare policies, her seat in Congress is far from guaranteed. The fight for control of Texas is just beginning, and the next few days will determine whether the state solidifies its status as a conservative stronghold or whether Democrats manage to regroup and regain influence.
