5,6,7 and 8 speed chains are the only sizes that are cross compatible. Other sizes are not compatible. Replace your chain with the proper size & speed. It is not that complicated. Count the number of cogs on your rear wheel. Specifically your freewheel or cassette. the center to center pivot points on all chain sizes are 3/32 nds of an of an inch apart (imperial unit of measurement). a single speed chain is the only chain that has a different size or measurement different from center to center. that measurement is 1/8 inch so if you see a chain labeled as 1/8 inch it is a single speed chain.
