Bringing the Power (Briefly) - National Power

Good Morning! :D

In the mid-1990s, as British Rail was being broken up by the Railway Act of 1993, the UK's energy companies were also being liberalised under sweeping privatisation enacted during 1989, which resulted in three primary power generating and supply firms, one of which, the largest by far, being National Power, which held the bulk of the UK's fossil-fuel based power stations.

Growing increasingly frustrated with British Rail's inefficiency and expense when it came to transporting their coal and limestone supplies, National Power took it upon themselves to procure a fleet of locomotives and wagons, the result being the short-lived National Power railway division, which, through the use of stylishly painted Class 59s and brand new bogie hoppers, would become a highly efficient mainline operation, though this sadly didn't reflect the corporate inefficiencies plaguing National Power itself, which rapidly faced its own collapse within only a decade of its formation.
