Jonathan Capehart just left The Washington Post after nearly two decades due to a disagreement with the paper’s new editorial direction under owner Jeff Bezos. In February 2025, Bezos mandated that the opinion section focus on “personal liberties and free markets” and communicate with “optimism about the country and the future.” Capehart felt this directive was untenable, arguing that it was impossible to ignore threats to American democracy, particularly in light of events like on January 6.
He expressed that the First Amendment compelled him to address such issues, which conflicted with the paper’s new focus. Capehart accepted a voluntary buyout in July 2025, joining other high-profile contributors like Ann Telnaes, David Shipley, Ruth Marcus, Eugene Robinson, and Joe Davidson in exiting the paper amid concerns over its rightward editorial shift.

In memorium, let’s watch his COMPLETELY BIASED coverage of Election Night 2024, watching Capehart become devastated at Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris.
