What should be the proper response when the Qur’an is being recited?

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 126th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe, What should be the proper response when the Qur’an is being recited?

When the Qur’an is being recited, Allah commands believers to show it the utmost respect by listening to it attentively and remaining silent. The Qur’an is not an ordinary book; it is the literal Word of Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad ? as guidance for all mankind. It deserves complete reverence, attention, and humility. The response of a believer when the Qur’an is being recited is an important aspect of adab (etiquette) and worship in Islam, and it reflects the heart’s relationship with the divine message.

Allah gives a direct command regarding this in Surah Al-A'raf verse 204:

"So when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy."

This verse clearly outlines two duties: listen attentively and remain silent. This is not just a suggestion but a command from Allah, indicating that the proper response to the Qur’an is one of humility and focus. The purpose of this command is also mentioned—so that you may receive mercy*. This indicates that attentiveness to the Qur’an is a means of attracting Allah’s mercy, blessings, and spiritual enlightenment.

The scholars have explained that this verse primarily applies during congregational prayer, especially when the imam recites aloud. However, it also applies more generally to any setting where the Qur’an is being recited, such as in lectures, gatherings, or even when listening at home or in a vehicle. Speaking, joking, or being inattentive during its recitation is considered disrespectful and may deprive one of its blessings.

The Qur’an also emphasizes the importance of humility and reflection when it is recited. In Surah Al-Isra verse 107-109, Allah describes the reaction of true believers to the Qur’an:

"Say, 'Believe in it or do not believe.' Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it—when it is recited to them—they fall upon their faces in prostration. And they say, 'Exalted is our Lord! Truly, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled.' And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it increases them in humility."

This powerful description shows that sincere hearts react to the Qur’an not with indifference, but with awe, tears, and submission. These verses illustrate the deep emotional and spiritual impact the Qur’an should have on believers. It should move the heart and strengthen the bond between the servant and the Creator.

In the Hadith, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) What should be the proper response when the Qur’an is being recited? also emphasized the importance of listening to the Qur’an. In Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5050, it is narrated:

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud said: The Prophet (PBUH) said to me, 'Recite the Qur’an to me.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Shall I recite to you when it was revealed to you?' He said, 'I love to hear it from others.' So I recited Surah An-Nisa until I reached the verse 41: "How will it be when We bring from every nation a witness, and We bring you, [O Muhammad], against these people as a witness?". He said, 'Enough now,' and I saw his eyes overflowing with tears."

This hadith shows how even the Prophet (PBUH), the recipient of the Qur’an, valued listening to its recitation from others and was deeply moved by its words. His reaction—tears flowing—demonstrates the ideal spiritual response when hearing the Qur’an.

Another narration in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 1785, states:
"Whoever listens to a verse from the Book of Allah, a light will be placed for him."

This hadith highlights the spiritual benefit and reward of simply listening to the Qur’an with attention and sincerity. It is not a passive act but a moment of gaining divine light, mercy, and knowledge.

In conclusion, the proper response when the Qur’an is being recited is to remain silent, listen attentively, and reflect upon its meanings with humility and reverence. This act is not only a demonstration of respect for the Divine Word but also a means of earning Allah’s mercy and spiritual elevation. The Qur’an is a conversation from the Creator to the creation, and the least a believer can do is to give it full attention, open the heart, and allow its guidance to penetrate the soul.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz
