What principle of justice and fairness does Allah emphasize regarding measurements and trade?

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 122th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe, What principle of justice and fairness does Allah emphasize regarding measurements and trade?

In Islam, justice and fairness in trade and measurements are not only social responsibilities but divine commands that reflect a person's integrity and piety. Allah emphasizes repeatedly in the Qur'an the importance of dealing with others justly, especially when it comes to weighing and measuring goods in trade and commerce. These principles are deeply rooted in Islamic teachings to prevent exploitation, fraud, and societal corruption.

One of the most explicit verses that discusses this principle is found in Surah Al-Mutaffifin verses 1 to 3:

"Woe to those that deal in fraud—those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, exact full measure, but when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due."

This passage reveals Allah’s stern warning against deceit in business transactions. The Surah opens with “Wail”, which is a grave warning and can be interpreted as a threat of punishment. It targets those who are dishonest in business dealings—those who demand full rights for themselves but give less to others. This clearly underlines the Islamic principle that justice is not limited to courtrooms but extends into marketplaces, workplaces, and everyday interactions.

Similarly, Surah Al-Isra verse 35, reinforces this standard:

"Give full measure when you measure, and weigh with a balance that is straight: that is the most fitting and the best in the end."

This verse encourages believers to be accurate and honest when measuring or weighing anything. The phrase "balance that is straight" implies a sense of justice, precision, and moral uprightness, indicating that these acts are not just mechanical duties but spiritual responsibilities.

This principle is further elaborated in Surah Al-An’am verse 152:

"And give full measure and weight in justice. We do not burden any soul beyond what it can bear."

Here, Allah links just measurement directly to accountability and ease, stating that everyone must be fair within their capacity. This reflects a balance between justice and mercy—a central theme in Islam. Moreover, the verse continues with reminders about fulfilling covenants and testifying truthfully, linking honesty in trade to overall ethical conduct in society.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as the final Messenger and the most excellent model of moral conduct, strongly emphasized honest trade in his teachings. In Sahih Muslim, Hadith 102, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

"The honest merchant will be with the Prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs on the Day of Resurrection."

This hadith shows the high status of a trustworthy and fair trader in the sight of Allah. Such a person not only earns wealth lawfully but also earns divine rewards comparable to some of the highest ranks in Islam.

Another relevant narration is from Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2314, where the Prophet (PBUH) said:

"Whoever sells a defective product without disclosing its defect will remain under the anger of Allah, and the angels will keep cursing him."

This hadith strictly warns against deception and concealing defects in goods, which is a common unethical practice in trade. Transparency, fairness, and honesty are essential traits of a believer, and those who fail in these matters risk divine displeasure and societal mistrust.

Throughout Islamic history, markets were closely monitored for ethical practices. The Prophet ? appointed officials like Muhtasib (market inspectors) to oversee that weights, measures, and trade ethics were upheld. This reflects the Prophet's commitment to ensuring justice in economic dealings.

In summary, Islam emphasizes the principle of fairness and justice in all transactions. Through clear commandments in the Qur'an and strong warnings and encouragement in Hadith, Muslims are taught that trade is not just a worldly interaction, but a spiritual act accountable before Allah. Being honest in trade strengthens trust, promotes social harmony, and ensures economic justice. Therefore, every Muslim is not only encouraged but obligated to uphold integrity, whether as a buyer, seller, or witness in any transaction.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz
