City Slickers is a 1929 black-and-white animated short from the Aesop’s Fables series, directed by Paul Terry. The cartoon explores the comic misadventures that unfold when two flashy city animals arrive in a quiet rural town, clashing with the country lifestyle through music, fashion, and fast-paced slapstick chaos.

Synopsis:

The cartoon opens in a sleepy countryside village, where a group of laid-back farm animals enjoy a simple, peaceful life. One day, a fancy car pulls into town carrying two flamboyant city animals—a fox in a tuxedo and a flashy goose wearing pearls and sunglasses.

The city duo sets out to “modernize” the farm: the fox opens a dance school in the barn while the goose holds a jazz fashion show. Chaos quickly follows. The cows try to dance but get tangled in their own tails; the pigs attempt city etiquette and trip over teacups. Meanwhile, a jealous rooster plots to kick the newcomers out.

A musical showdown ensues at the town social: barnyard swing versus city jazz. In the end, the townsfolk find a groove that blends both styles, and the city animals are accepted—so long as they help clean up the mess.

The short closes with a moral card:
“City or country—it’s rhythm that counts!”
