Description and FeaturesThe Sky Ladder is a 168-meter (551-foot) long climbing path affixed to a near-vertical cliff face, positioned at an elevation of about 1,480–1,500 meters (4,855–4,920 feet) above sea level, with a sheer drop that can feel like 5,000 feet when gazing into the misty abyss below.

It's constructed from steel handrails, footrests, tethers, and cables bolted directly into the rock, allowing climbers to traverse steep sections while clipped in for safety. The path spirals and clings to the mountain, offering panoramic views of gorges, valleys, and the surrounding peaks that resemble the Big Dipper constellation (hence the mountain's name).

The experience typically lasts around three hours, combining adrenaline with breathtaking scenery, including sites like the 1520 Eye of Sky Platform and Ruyi Glass Walkway nearby.

It's designed for adventure seekers, with the mist and clouds often adding a dramatic, ethereal effect, as seen in the video where climbers appear to ascend into the fog.

History and DevelopmentQixing Mountain has long been known among local mountaineers as one of Hunan's most challenging peaks due to its rugged terrain and high altitude (averaging over 1,300 meters/4,265 feet).

The Sky Ladder itself is a relatively new addition, opened in late 2024 as part of efforts to boost tourism in the Zhangjiajie area.

How to Visit and CostsAccess: Start by reaching the lower station of the Seven Star Mountain Cable Car in southern Zhangjiajie. Options include special buses from Huatian Hotel (20 minutes, every 30 minutes from 9:00–16:00), direct buses from Zhangjiajie West Railway Station (CNY9, about 1 hour), or driving/taxi. From there, take the cable car up, then a sightseeing bus to the ladder area.

The site operates from 8:30–16:00 (last entry at 16:00).
Tickets: Entrance to Seven Star Mountain is CNY239 for adults (includes cable car and sightseeing bus), with reduced rates of CNY120 for minors 14–18 and seniors 60–65, and CNY92 for minors under 14 or seniors over 65.

The Sky Ladder experience costs an additional CNY580–780 (around $80–110 USD), depending on the source and possible updates—book in advance via local tour operators or B&Bs, as spots fill up quickly.

Requirements: Participants must be taller than 1.2 meters (about 4 feet) and in good health—no heart disease, hypertension, or similar conditions. It's not recommended for those with a fear of heights.
