Across Africa, military spending keeps climbing, part of a global defense budget that hit a record $2.7 trillion in 2024, according to military africa. Yet, despite this arms race, poverty remains stubbornly high: About 464 million africans still live in extreme poverty, with countries like Nigeria and the DRC leading at over 11.7%, as reported by statistica.com. Conflict and poverty remain deeply intertwined.
At the recent 19th International Human Rights Summit held at the United Nations in new york, youth leaders, diplomats, and civil society advocates rallied around the theme “education for peace.” Among the bold ideas was a call for governments worldwide to channel 1% of their military budgets into peace education in schools.
But can peace and civic education truly help break this cycle of conflict, especially here in africa? That’s what we’ll be exploring on today’s program.
