Franz Schubert: String Quartet No. 13 in A minor, D. 804 (Rosamunde) (2015) (1824)

I. Allegro ma non troppo II. Andante III. Menuetto: Allegretto – Trio IV. Allegro moderato

Around 1824 Schubert began to concentrate on chamber music, but his intensely lyrical A minor quartet, first performed in march of that year, is full of many reminiscences of his earlier works. These include, in the tense first movement the spirit of his song ‘Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel’ and the melody of the song ‘Schöne Welt, wo bist du?’ The theme of the second movement is taken from the composer’s music for the play ‘Rosamunde’ and this has given the quartet its nick-name.

Performed by the Czech Philharmonic Quartet at the 2015 Indian Summer in Levoca Festival.
