A Tragic Murder and a Conviction Still in Doubt

In 1970, two West Virginia University freshmen—Karen Ferrell and Mared Malarik—left a movie theater and never made it back to their dorm. Their disappearance shocked Morgantown, and what followed was a search filled with dead ends, disturbing discoveries, and more questions than answers. Months later, their remains were found in a wooded area, and years after that, a man confessed to the murders. But was the confession real—or a lie?

Eugene Clawson was convicted, but doubts have never disappeared. No physical evidence tied him to the crime. His confession changed over time. Even some law enforcement officers believe he may not have been the killer.

In this episode of Midwest Murders, we revisit the tragic case of Karen and Mared—and ask whether justice was truly served. More than fifty years later, silence still surrounds the truth.
