The Druids, the priestly caste of the ancient Celts, were keepers of sacred knowledge passed down orally over generations. They were philosophers, astronomers, healers, and judges. Their teachings included ideas about reincarnation, the soul’s immortality, the harmony of nature, and the spiritual structure of the cosmos. Though their tradition was eventually suppressed by Roman and Christian expansion, traces of their wisdom survive, and their reverence for nature and cosmic law can be seen echoed in Renaissance alchemy and Rosicrucian thought. The rites of Mithras, practiced across the Roman Empire, especially among soldiers, were centered around a god born from stone, symbolizing the rising sun and spiritual rebirth. Initiates underwent a series of trials and symbolic deaths to attain union with the divine. These initiations were not simply theatrical, but profound inner experiences meant to awaken the soul and purify the individual of lower passions. Mithraism emphasized the battle between light and darkness, the ascent of the soul, and the importance of inner strength—concepts that would reappear in Gnostic teachings and later in Hermeticism and Freemasonry.
