In this video, Benji presents the theoretical foundations of a new liberation psychology. He critiques traditional psychoanalysis and dualistic views in psychology and argues for a dialectical materialist psychology. He points to the influence of colonial and capitalist projections on western views of the unconscious and invokes Fanon. He then presents a novel account of the emergence of langage, complex cognition and human consciousness based in recent advances in experimental and developmental psychology. He argues this view provides a more adequate account of individual and collective unconscious processes and the impact of dominant ideology on our unconscious selves and collective identities. He then shows how a fundamental contradiction lies at the heart of the individual capitalist and colonial unconscious between systems built on unequal fundamental human worth and the inextinguible longing for equal fundamental human worth. He concludes by showing how this offers the global movement for human emancipaton a basis to resist unequal, racist and supremacist ideologies. Benji makes the case for a psychology that acknowledges the complexities of human identity and the social context of psychological development that can serve to dismantle of individual and collective oppressive systems, and a path towards liberation.
