UK's plan to recognise Palestine is symbolic, but increases pressure on Israel: Analysis

The United Kingdom says it will recognise the state of Palestine in September, unless the Israeli government takes substantive steps to end the “appalling situation” in Gaza.
Israel has criticised the plan, saying it would reward Hamas.

Ian Parmeter is a research scholar at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies at Australian National University.
He says the UK's decision is symbolic and other countries may follow suit.
