100th Pony Swim In Chincoteague, VA

The ponies and foals are moved into position for the big annual swim. Certain ponies and foals are selected to be auctioned off to fund the volunteer fire department. Some are designated for the BuyBack program to return them to the herd.

These are wild horses who live on Assateague Island all the rest of the year. They are rounded up on a Monday, corralled on Tuesday, swim on Wednesday, sold on Thursday, and swim back on Friday.

Foals too young to swim or ponies who aren’t able to make the swim are ferried over.

Foals who haven’t been weaned can still be purchased but don’t leave until they are old enough to be away from their dams.

This was a lifelong dream fulfilled. So thankful to have been able to do this!
