The endless stream of ads on Instagram, the thousand tricks to avoid showing people the lowest price, YouTube that prefers to only show ads... It not only causes daily frustration, but also genuine concerns: what's going on? Is the internet really going to pieces?

American activist and author Cory Doctorow coined a term that describes in one word what's wrong with the internet: Enshittification. You could say "verkuttificatie" in Dutch.

Doctorow not only coined the term Enshitiffication for what's wrong with the internet, he also provided a thorough analysis of how it happened. He explains why major American tech companies can deface their products with impunity, and yet we keep using them. Because the classical economic idea that if a product or service is no longer good, the free market will automatically make room for better alternatives, clearly no longer applies in the digital economy.

Wie tegenwoordig een zoekterm intikt op Google krijgt op de eerste pagina in plaats van goede zoekresultaten vooral advertenties voorgeschoteld. En wat scams.

De eindeloze stroom advertenties op Instagram, de duizend trucs om mensen toch vooral niet de laagste prijs te laten zien, Youtube die het liefst alleen nog maar advertenties laat zien... Het zorgt niet alleen voor dagelijkse frustratie, maar ook voor oprechte zorgen: wat is er aan de hand? Is het internet echt kapot aan het gaan?

De Amerikaanse activist en schrijver Cory Doctorow bedacht er een term voor die in één woord omschrijft wat er mis is met het internet: Enshittification. Verkuttificatie zou je kunnen zeggen in het Nederlands.

Doctorow bedacht niet alleen de term Enshitiffication voor wat er misgaat met het internet, hij maakte ook een doorwrochte analyse hoe dat heeft kunnen gebeuren. Waarom de grote Amerikaanse techbedrijven ongestraft hun producten kunnen verkuttificeren, en wij ze toch blijven gebruiken. Want het klassieke economische idee, dat als een product of dienst niet goed meer is de vrije markt vanzelf ruimte biedt aan betere alternatieven, geldt duidelijk niet meer in de digitale economie.
