Laguna Koi Ponds

My visit to Laguna Koi Ponds. Its the one and only place I could find Shori Koi Food. It is one of the highest percentages of Crude Protein at 45 Percent. There are others a tad higher but this brand was the closest and one of the highest. I did mention Blue Ridge rated at 35 percent but later found out they offer a Premium Blend at 41 Percent Crude Protein, something I shall consider buying if it offers a small pellet size due to me also having Baby Koi. Visiting Laguna Koi Ponds you will find a nice atmosphere and the further you travel back into it, the less traffic you will hear. A nice collection of plants you will find, and I stress the importance of using the Water Hyacinth for breeding Koi. I would really stress not using any Water Plants mainly because Large Koi can be very destructive being Bottom Feeders but for Breeding I find them very useful. I have used Hyacinth successfully many times. I might add it only takes 3 days for the eggs to hatch. Talk about immediate results, and the fry grow at an extremely fast rate. Getting them to breed I've had to induce them to a 'Water Change' representing .. oh a 'Snow Melt' using a colder water method, kind of triggers the action. Usually just finding a Fat Female is good enough. The book recommends 1 Female and up to 3 males, so as to ease the Female in laying the eggs due to the 'Bumping action' taking place. The Hyacinth is the perfect medium (silk sheets) for this to take place, with the eggs clinging to the black roots of the hyacinth. After that throw the hyacinth out in the trash, it will only dirty up your pond. I might also add I do plan on using Water Plants but only in the Upper Sedimentation tanks in which has many purposes. Shade for less algae growth, oxygenation for the water and they also collect a certain amount of debris. Those 3 reasons are why I would use them. But NOT in the actual pond areas. The only exception might be using the Elephant Ears because they can grow very tall. On a side note here, I never use the medium that the plants come in. That medium is usually full of dirt, sand, and/or even slit. I use just 'Plain Smooth River Rock' and placed in a soft net mesh that will not harm the fish. The plant roots feed off the nutrients in the water. Those nice water lilies are nice, but in the long run ... large Koi can be very destructive.
In this video you will hear me talk about the 4 types of scales Koi come in. Actually there are more, and in later videos I shall go into great detail about them talking about the 5th. But the 4 basic types of scale patterns are;
Regular scales- just like any other type of fish with scales
Mirror scale- row of scales just on the very top (dorsal) area of the fish.
German scale-row of scales on the sides running along the 'lateral lines'
Leather- NO SCALES at all, but just along the Dorsal Fin.
Correction of some of the names. I called one at the beginning Kawari but its actually Hariwake which is a Solid Metallic White base with patches of Metallic Yellow. This name is not to be confused with Kawarigoi which is a 'Classification of all others.' The Hariwake, I call them Lemon and are a very pretty metallic White and Yellow. Later on in the video I will talk about how they came about using a plain white koi mixed with a metallic Platinum Koi producing a unique color, sometimes a metallic White and Gold. Sounds confusing? Just think of myself trying to explain all this, not bad for an old guy eh? Ok, as the video continues I point out the 'Diamond scale version' of Koi and they are unique to say the least.
Diamond In The Rough? Most people can not pick one, it usually requires the trained eye and many factors to look for. Such as a Large Head and small body, or maybe a dirty head as opposed to a 'clean white or creamy white head color.' Shape alone weighs heavily on judging. A 'Stream Line body' is desirable. What is Beauty in a Woman? Its a matter of personal choices, that is; What is Pleasing To Your Eyes. I have some outrages looking Koi that many professionals might find ugly, but its a beauty to my eyes.
Butterfly Fins, some find these wonderfully beautiful, I don't although I have about 3 of them. The Butterfly Koi, usually have very long pectoral fins as well as 'Long Whiskers' and extremely 'Large Tail.'
Gosanke is referred to 'The Top Three' and usually are the winners of the Koi Contest. They are; Kohaku, Sanke and Showa.
I wish I could continue talking/writing but space is a matter of importance. So I'll be brief, Kujaku means Peacock, Goromo means Robed Ai-Goromo- robed beauty and Budo-Goromo means Purple robed.
Goshiki ... well I don't know what it means, but it is a blend of breeding a Kohaku and an Asagi together producing a different type of color, more opaque orange as well as unique and less translucent compared the the Kohaku. Perhaps I will cover Goshiki in great detail in another video I have to load up ... already made using the ... are you ready for this?; " The Koi ID Field Guide. Sort of like Bird Watching out in the forest spotting birds; "Ah yes, that's the Yellow Breasted Belly Sap Sucker."
Perhaps I should place a 'Dis-claimer' on this video, watch only if you are ready to fall asleep. Although, some may find this Interesting.
