The Jewish Science: Exploring the Kabbalistic Roots of Modern Psychology

Anxiety, depression, and identity confusion have become defining features of modern life, and yet the way we have been conditioned to conceptualize these maladies is anything but organic.

This video traces the origins of modern psychology back to its origins in early 20th-century Vienna, where Sigmund Freud and a close-knit circle of Jewish intellectuals met both to map the architecture of the unconscious as well as formalize the still-fledgling field of psychoanalysis. But this was far from a solely scientific endeavor; it was an intellectual project deeply rooted in Jewish thought. Freud’s theories, alongside those of his inner circle, often echoed ideas that had long ago be codified in ancient Judaism and in particular, the mystical tradition of the Kabbalah, embedding a distinctly Jewish framework into the very foundations of modern psychology.

We’ll explore Freud’s complex connection to his Jewish heritage and how it shaped his vision of the human psyche. We’ll also examine how his disciples—Alfred Adler, Otto Rank, Carl Jung, and others—expanded and exported this “Jewish science” into every facet of Western society, reshaping its culture as well as redefining how we see ourselves today.
