Angola’s capital, Luanda, erupted in violence after taxi drivers launched a strike over rising fuel prices. The government recently raised the cost of subsidised gasoline from 300 to 400 kwanzas per litre, triggering widespread anger. What began as a protest quickly turned chaotic with looting, burning barricades, and clashes between demonstrators and police. Videos showed crowds confronting officers and chanting slogans against President Joao Lourenco. The Luanda provincial government condemned the violence, reporting attacks on public buses, private vehicles, and property. Protests have now continued for three straight weekends. Angola's ruling MPLA party, in power since 1975, is under pressure as frustration over inflation and inequality builds across the country.
