DOMESDAY BOOK - History of Norman England

On Traveling Through History, we take a look at one of the greatest accomplishments of the Medieval period, the Domesday Book, a survey of all 7 circuits and all counties of England in 1086, 20 years after the great Norman conquest in 1066 under William the Conqueror.

The Domesday Book, completed in 1086, is a comprehensive record of England's land ownership and resources created by William the Conqueror.  It served as a detailed inventory for taxation purposes and to solidify Norman control after the Conquest of 1066. The survey, conducted by royal officials, recorded information like land ownership, value, and resources (including livestock and people) for each area. The resulting manuscript, originally known as Liber de Wintonia, was later nicknamed "Domesday" due to its perceived finality and authority, much like the Day of Judgment.
