In early June China deployed both operational aircraft carriers and their two strike groups simultaneously to the Western Pacific for the first time. This is a significant milestone for the Peoples Liberation Army Navy. These deployments demonstrate Beijing's blue water ambitions and the capability to project power outside the first and second island chains, sending a clear message to not only the U.S. and Taiwan but also Australia, Japan, and the Philippines. China now has two operational carrier strike groups, and a third carrier is in sea trials. Meanwhile, The United States moved two Pacific Fleet carriers to the Middle East and announced the next Ford-Class carrier will be delayed by two years! American China policy has continuously neglected to account for China’s military buildup and its unrestricted warfare against us while we unwisely put resources and time into other parts of the world. Fortunately, the Trump Administration is making a concerted effort to make the long-awaited pivot to the Indo-Pacific to deter China, but will we have the political will to devote the vast amount of dollars and effort needed to be successful?
