Mayor issues statement after 2 killed, 5 injured in Mt. Vernon shooting
MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (KFVS) - Multiple agencies responded to a deadly shooting in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

According to Mount Vernon Police, officers were called to the 600 block of South 15th Street just before 1 a.m. on Sunday, July 27, for multiple shooting reports.

When first responders arrived, they found several people who had been shot and needed to be taken to the hospital.

Police say two victims died. Five other victims are currently receiving treatment.

In a statement, Mayor John Lewis said, “[...]although this non-sanctioned event was attended by more than 100 to 150 people, we are not getting any cooperation [from] the attendees on what transpired.”

He also stated that “[a]ll available resources are being brought to bear, and we will not stop nor rest until this shooter or shooters are in a cage where they belong.”
