I'm from north of Brisbane Australia and late this past summer we had no mosquitos. Earlier in the summer we had them, but I wasn't really paying attention to know exactly when they stopped. Last year they hung on into overnight conditions that you would think was too cold. I remember thinking about it. So we got flooded in February. After the lead up rain and there was plenty of that, there was no mosquitos, I noticed that. Then we got that week or two of rain till the big day that did all the damage. Still got no mosquitos, then in March we got some story about Japanese encephalitis, was wondering if that was to bring attention to mosquitos but in a way to make you happy that you didn't encounter them.

So I was wondering if this could be connected to what you are saying Logical Annie? Because you did say in a reply that you need to watch the rain also. Have talked to one guy in Sydney and he can only remember seeing one mosquito lately. Sydney and NSW got flooded in a similar way to us. We also have the USA and Canada coming into their summer so are interested if they have a similar experience of a lot of rain but no mosquitos to follow up after perfect conditions.

I'm also from the northern part of the Brisbane suburbs (near Boondall wetlands and the swamps around Brisbane airport) and I can tell you we have had HEAPS of mosquitos. Every time it rained, even just a little bit, we had a mosquito infestation. Maybe not quite as many as previous years, but I'm always finding mosquito larvae in the pot plant saucers after rain and watering and have to constantly empty them out and water the plants again. We're definitely getting more sand flies (midges) which we didn't used to get this close to the city. Having gardened this past weekend, I can tell you the mosquitoes (and sand flies) are definitely still around. Sadly paying the price for being outside last weekend.
