What instruction does Allah give about eating and drinking, and what is said about wastefulness?
Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 121th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,What instruction does Allah give about eating and drinking, and what is said about wastefulness?
In Islam, eating and drinking are considered essential blessings from Allah, and they are closely connected to one’s spiritual, physical, and social well-being. However, the Qur’an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasize that these blessings must be enjoyed with moderation and gratitude. Allah instructs the believers in **Surah Al-A‘raf verse 31 with a powerful message:
"O Children of Adam! Take your adornment at every masjid and eat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess."
This verse highlights a clear and balanced instruction: **eat and drink, but do not indulge in excess. Islam does not promote asceticism by forbidding food or drink, nor does it allow reckless consumption. The phrase **“do not be excessive” serves as a divine principle to guide Muslims in all aspects of consumption. Allah ends the verse by saying: "Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess." This shows that excessiveness is not just discouraged—it is disliked by Allah, and therefore spiritually dangerous.
The concept of moderation in eating and drinking is repeatedly reinforced in the Qur’an. In Surah Al-Isra verse 27, Allah warns:
"Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful."
This is a stern warning: wastefulness, or *israf*, not only displeases Allah but is also associated with the behavior of Satan. The Arabic term “ikhwan al-shayateen” (brothers of the devils) implies that wasteful people act in a way that aligns them spiritually with the disobedient and ungrateful. It portrays wastefulness as a form of rebellion and disregard for divine blessings.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also emphasized the importance of moderation and avoiding waste, even when resources are abundant. In a narration by Anas ibn Malik in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3349; graded Sahih, the Prophet (PBUH) said:
“The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few morsels to keep his back straight. If he must eat more, then one third for his food, one third for his drink, and one third for his breath.
This hadith is a comprehensive guide to balanced eating. It teaches not only about quantity but also about discipline, health, and spiritual awareness. Overeating leads to laziness, illness, and neglect of spiritual duties like prayer. Thus, the Prophet (PBUH) instructs that the stomach should be only partially filled—showing that moderation is key.
Another important narration from the Prophet (PBUH) emphasizes avoiding waste even during acts of worship. In Sunan Ibn Majah,Hadees 425 it is reported:
“Do not waste water, even if you are by a flowing river.”
This hadith extends the Islamic principle of avoiding wastefulness beyond food and into all areas of life. Even when resources are plentiful, like water in a river, Muslims are taught not to waste. This discipline trains the soul to be conscious of Allah’s blessings and to live with gratitude and responsibility.
Modern lifestyles often promote consumerism, overeating, and waste, but Islam offers a timeless and universal approach: enjoy Allah’s blessings with gratitude, restraint, and purpose. Food and drink should nourish the body and enable worship—not lead to arrogance, laziness, or disease.
In conclusion, Allah’s instruction about eating and drinking is rooted in balance, discipline, and gratitude. As the Qur’an states in Surah Al-A‘raf verse 31, believers are permitted to eat and drink, but warned not to be excessive. Wastefulness is condemned in Surah Al-Isra verse 27 and linked to Satanic behavior. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reinforced this message through numerous hadiths, guiding Muslims toward a lifestyle of moderation. By following these teachings, one protects not only their physical health but also their spiritual well-being and societal responsibilities.
With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen
Allah Hafiz
