"What command does Allah give to the children of Adam regarding their appearance at the masjid?

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 118th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe, "What command does Allah give to the children of Adam regarding their appearance at the masjid?

Allah Almighty gives a clear and profound instruction in the Qur’an regarding how believers, particularly the children of Adam, should present themselves when coming to the masjid. In Surah Al-A‘raf verse 31, Allah says:

"O Children of Adam! Take your adornment at every masjid and eat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess."

This verse commands the believers to appear in a state of cleanliness, modesty, and proper attire when going to the masjid. The word "zinah" used in this verse refers to adornment, which includes clean clothes, good appearance, and proper manners. Islam places a high emphasis on external cleanliness as a reflection of internal purity. This verse is not just about clothing but about showing respect and reverence in the presence of Allah, especially in His house.

According to Tafsir Ibn Kathir, this verse was revealed to correct the practice of the pagan Arabs who used to perform Tawaf around the Kaaba without clothing, claiming it was an act of humility. Allah responded to this misguided belief by commanding the children of Adam to dress properly for every act of worship in the masjid. Imam Ibn Kathir writes:

(Tafsir Ibn Kathir on Surah Al-A‘raf, versee 31)
"This verse shows that it is recommended to wear the best and cleanest clothes when going to the masjid, especially for Jumu'ah (Friday) prayers and Eid."

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) further emphasized the importance of good appearance and cleanliness in the masjid. In a Hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim Hadith 91, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

"Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty."

This hadith underlines the divine attribute of **beauty** and encourages believers to reflect this in their presentation, especially during prayer and while entering the masjid. It is not about arrogance or showiness, but rather about honoring the sacred place of worship with dignity.

Another authentic narration by Imam al-Bukhari** indicates that the Prophet (PBUH) had special clothes he would wear for Jumu‘ah and Eid prayers:

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 912)
"The Prophet had a specific garment that he would wear for the Friday prayer and for Eid."

This shows the Sunnah practice of adorning oneself in special, clean, and presentable clothes for the masjid. It further confirms the Qur’anic directive that entering a place of worship requires preparation—both spiritual and physical.

In addition to clothing, this command implies general hygiene, including being in a state of wudu (ablution), trimming nails, using miswak (tooth-stick), applying perfume (for men), and wearing clean shoes or removing them before entering the prayer area, depending on the mosque’s customs.

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

in (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 1095; classed as Hasan)
"If one of you goes to Jumu‘ah, let him perform ghusl (ritual bath), wear his best clothes, use perfume if he has any."

This comprehensive preparation reflects both outward cleanliness and inner reverence. It is not only a personal responsibility but also a communal etiquette. A neat, pleasant appearance in the masjid enhances the beauty of the congregation, encourages harmony, and prevents discomfort among others.

In conclusion, Surah Al-A‘raf verse 31 establishes a timeless principle of maintaining **dignity, respect, and cleanliness** in all acts of worship, particularly when entering the house of Allah. Supported by the Prophet’s ? practice and hadith, this command teaches Muslims that honoring the masjid with proper attire and hygiene is not optional—it is a sign of true devotion and respect for the Creator and His sacred space.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz
