Behind the Mask.
The Mask of Virtue: When the "Great and Good" Are the Most Depraved
History is riddled with figures who presented themselves as paragons of virtue, morality, and leadership—only to be unmasked later as depraved, abusive, or fundamentally corrupt. This persistent pattern raises disturbing questions about the nature of good and evil, and whether those who scream the loudest about virtue are often those who embody its opposite. The idea that the best are sometimes the worst isn't just poetic irony; it is a recurring truth of human history, and more relevant than ever in the age of social media, virtue-signalling, and image management.
Jimmy Savile: The Smiling Face of Evil.
Perhaps one of the most chilling examples is Jimmy Savile, the British TV personality, charity fundraiser, and national icon. For decades, Savile was welcomed into the highest halls of power. He hosted Jim'll Fix It, raised millions for hospitals, and was knighted by the Queen. Yet after his death, it was revealed that he had been one of the most prolific sexual predators in modern British history, abusing hundreds of children and vulnerable people—often within the very institutions that celebrated him.
Savile is not just an example of individual depravity, but of systemic blindness. Institutions such as the BBC, NHS hospitals, and even the royal family turned a blind eye to the whispers and allegations. His carefully curated image as a do-gooder was not just a disguise—it was a shield. His charity work gave him access and cover, and his fame dissuaded scrutiny.
The Catholic Church Abuse Scandal.
The global sexual abuse crisis within the Catholic Church is another glaring example. For centuries, the Church has been a moral authority, defining what is good and evil for millions. Yet behind closed doors, thousands of priests across the world were found to have committed horrific abuses against children, often with the knowledge and complicity of the institution’s hierarchy.
The Church's handling of the scandal—transferring accused priests, silencing victims, and hiding evidence—further reveals how evil often wears the mask of righteousness. The very institution that preaches confession and repentance became a fortress of denial and deception.
Jeffrey Epstein: Philanthropist and Predator.
Jeffrey Epstein presented himself as a philanthropist, an intellectual, and a well-connected financier who mingled with presidents, royalty, and scientists. Yet underneath this polished image was a vast web of sex trafficking, blackmail, and abuse involving underage girls and a network of enablers. Epstein’s wealth and connections granted him protection, even after being convicted of sex offences in 2008.
He was not a lone wolf; his case exposed a network of individuals and institutions—ranging from politicians and academics to intelligence agencies—that enabled or ignored his crimes. Again, virtue was weaponised. Epstein donated to universities, funded research, and spoke of social progress—all while living a life of calculated predation.
Harvey Weinstein: Power, Prestige, and Predation.
Harvey Weinstein, the Hollywood mogul, was once heralded as a supporter of progressive causes and feminist filmmaking. He gave acceptance speeches about social justice, funded liberal campaigns, and built careers. Yet behind closed doors, he was a serial abuser who preyed on vulnerable actresses, silencing them with threats, bribes, and legal intimidation.
The #MeToo movement was born from this exposure, and it served as a stark reminder that often, those who position themselves as allies or champions of justice are merely cloaking their own power abuse. Weinstein was able to hide in plain sight for decades, protected by his reputation, wealth, and a complicit culture.
The Nature of Good and Evil.
These examples raise crucial questions: Is evil more comfortable behind the mask of virtue? Are we culturally conditioned to trust those who appear good—particularly those who shout the loudest about their goodness?
The philosopher Hannah Arendt coined the phrase “the banality of evil” when describing Adolf Eichmann, a Nazi bureaucrat responsible for orchestrating the Holocaust. He wasn’t a monster in appearance or manner, but an obedient functionary who hid behind duty and procedure. Evil, Arendt observed, often comes wearing a smile and a suit.
Similarly, Carl Jung argued that unless a person faces the darkness within, their “shadow” will operate unconsciously—and often destructively. The lesson here is profound: those who never question their own righteousness are often the most dangerous. They externalise evil, demonising others while ignoring or denying the rot within themselves.
Today’s Landscape: The Performance of Virtue.
In today’s world of curated online identities, cancel culture, and public performance, this pattern is more relevant than ever. Influencers, politicians, activists, and CEOs perform virtue for clicks, likes, and public approval. But how many of these figures live up to their image behind closed doors? When public image is a currency, hypocrisy is inevitable.
Take recent exposés of social justice influencers who turned out to be abusive in private, or corporations preaching equality while exploiting workers. Virtue becomes a costume, and in some cases, a Trojan horse.
Conclusion: The Wolf in Shepherd’s Clothing.
The repeated lesson of history is that those who seek power, fame, and virtue-signalling applause should be scrutinised the most. Goodness is not loud, and evil is rarely obvious. True morality is not a performance, but a discipline—often quiet, often inconvenient, and often without recognition.
As we face a world where the worst crimes are committed under the guise of the best intentions, we must learn to look beyond appearances. Evil rarely announces itself. It flatters, it donates, it smiles, and it lies. The devil, as they say, was once the most beautiful angel in heaven—and today, he might be wearing a suit, holding a charity cheque, and trending on social media.
