Popeye the Sailor Man: Ancient Fistory (1953) is a color animated short from Famous Studios, directed by Seymour Kneitel, part of the Popeye the Sailor theatrical series. Running approximately 7 minutes, it’s a humorous, loose spoof of the Cinderella fairy tale, set in a vaguely medieval world with a playful, anachronistic twist.Plot: In “Ye Olden Times,” Popeye is a downtrodden servant scrubbing floors at Bluto’s Beanery. Bluto, the brutish owner, heads to a royal ball where Princess Olive will choose a suitor. Popeye, left behind, is visited by his Fairy Godpappy (Poopdeck Pappy, in his final theatrical appearance), who magically transforms a can of spinach into a muscle car and Popeye’s rags into a snazzy suit, warning that the magic will revert at midnight. At the ball, Olive is charmed by Popeye’s arrival, but Bluto competes for her affection. Olive proposes an archery contest, which proves inconclusive, leading to a duel. Bluto cheats, blasting Popeye with a cannon, and chases Olive. As midnight strikes, Popeye’s car turns back into a spinach can, which he eats, gaining super strength. He conjures a horse and armor, defeats Bluto, and rescues Princess Olive, winning her heart as “Cinderfella.”
