No More Bread Crumbs: Why One Parish Gets the Latin Mass and Yours Doesn’t – And What You Can Do About It”
Welcome back, dear listeners, to The Catholic Reboot where we seek to restore all things in Christ, especially what has been cast aside, forgotten, or attacked in these times of confusion and upheaval.
Today’s episode touches a nerve and rightfully so.
Let’s begin with the news that triggered this conversation.
Segment 1: A Glimpse of Light – But Shadows Remain
Recently, it was made public that Pope Francis has personally granted permission to Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas to continue celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass, despite the severe restrictions placed upon this form of worship by his 2021 motu proprio, Traditiones Custodes.
Now, this parish isn’t just any parish. It's a former Anglican-use parish that was welcomed into full communion with Rome through the Pastoral Provision and later the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter. Its beauty, liturgical precision, and deep reverence are well known. For years, the faithful there have been nourished by the traditional liturgy first through the and now the full Traditional Latin Mass.
The Vatican’s approval may appear merciful or even generous.
But we must pause and ask the question:
Why just them? Why not all of us?
Segment 2: The Unjust Weight of “Traditiones Custodes”
When Traditiones Custodes was issued, it struck a blow against the very heart of the Catholic faithful who are drawn to the Mass of the Ages the Mass that nourished saints, inspired martyrs, and glorified God for over a millennium.
What was once a treasure recognized by Pope Benedict XVI in Summorum Pontificum was suddenly described as a threat to unity, a source of division, and something to be limited, monitored, and eventually extinguished.
• Latin Masses were relocated outside parish churches.
• Bishops were pressured not to permit new TLM communities.
• Priests were forbidden from celebrating the TLM unless individually approved.
• Dioceses across the world saw the Mass suppressed with little explanation.
This wasn’t a movement toward unity. It was a command to conform. Unity without tradition is not unity it is uniformity masquerading as obedience.
And so we find ourselves in a strange contradiction:
• One parish in Texas is deemed “worthy” of the Traditional Mass.
• Others, full of faithful Catholics, are cast aside like beggars pleading at the gates.
But the Latin Mass is not a political privilege. It is our rightful inheritance.
Segment 3: Isolated Exceptions are Not Restoration
Now, let’s be clear: we rejoice that Our Lady of the Atonement can continue to offer the Mass reverently and fully.
But this dispensation does not signal a shift in papal policy.
Rather, it shows that permissions are now granted arbitrarily, and the faithful are expected to accept this as normal. One bishop may advocate for his flock; another may comply with unjust restrictions. One parish gets to flourish; another gets shut down. This spiritual favoritism is beneath the dignity of the Church founded by Christ.
We must ask:
Is the Mass of the Ages good, true, and holy or is it not?
If it is good why restrict it?
If it is harmful why allow it at all?
The truth is: there is no doctrinal or pastoral justification for the suppression of the Latin Mass. The only explanation is ideological a vision of the Church that views tradition as a threat to modern progress.
Segment 4: The Danger of Passive Waiting
Here is where we, the faithful, must take responsibility.
Too many of us are quietly waiting waiting for the next pope, the next bishop, the next document, the next exception, the next crumb.
But Christ did not command His apostles to “wait and see.”
He told them to go forth, to be bold, to proclaim the truth.
If we continue to sit silently while tradition is dismantled, we are complicit in its disappearance.
Segment 5: A Game Plan for the Faithful
Let’s talk solutions. Here is a game plan for reclaiming our liturgical heritage.
1. Organize Locally
Don’t wait for leadership from above. Find like-minded faithful in your parish or diocese. Form groups. Begin conversations. Gather signatures. Start novenas. You are not alone.
2. Petition Your Bishop: Respectfully but Firmly
Use Canon 212 of the Code of Canon Law, which says:
“The Christian faithful have the right... to make known to the sacred pastors their needs, especially spiritual ones, and their desires.”
Request the Latin Mass in writing. Make it public. Make it spiritual. Offer it with fasting. But don’t be silent.
3. Invite Traditional Priestly Orders
Where possible, ask your bishop to invite FSSP, ICKSP, or other traditional orders into your diocese. If your bishop refuses, document it and share it with others who can help advocate.
4. Be Ready to Travel and Sacrifice
If no Mass is nearby, be willing to drive. Be willing to reorganize your life around the Mass. This is what the saints did. This is what our ancestors did under persecution.
5. Evangelize with Beauty
Host talks. Share videos of the Latin Mass. Give away missals. Educate people on what they are missing. Don’t be angry be passionate, clear, and joyful.
6. Support Traditional Catholic Media and Priests
Promote voices who are fighting for reverence. Support your local priest if he’s under pressure. Write to bishops who support the TLM. Let them know we are grateful and will stand with them.
7. Fast, Pray, Offer Reparation
This fight is not just about ecclesiastical policy. It is spiritual warfare. Every Rosary counts. Every Holy Hour consoles Our Lord. Offer your sufferings for the restoration of the Church.
Segment 6: Courage from History
Remember: this is not the first time Catholics have been denied their rites.
• The English Martyrs died for the Mass.
• The Vendean Catholics rose up when their churches were closed.
• The Ukrainian Greek Catholics survived underground for decades.
We are not asking for novelty. We are asking for what has always been ours.
As Pope Benedict XVI said:
“What earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too… It behooves all of us to preserve the riches which have developed in the Church’s faith and prayer.”
These riches are not outdated. They are timeless.
Closing: A Call to Action and Prayer
Dear listener:
Don’t wait for another dispensation.
Don’t accept crumbs when God desires to give you the banquet.
Don’t give up on tradition defend it with all your strength.
It is time for us to rise, to organize, to educate, to pray, to act.
The Epistle – Proverbs 31:10-31
(A reading from the book of Proverbs)
"Who shall find a valiant woman? Far and from the uttermost coasts is the price of her. The heart of her husband trusteth in her: and he shall have no need of spoils. She will render him good, and not evil, all the days of her life. …
She hath opened her hand to the needy, and stretched out her hands to the poor. … Strength and beauty are her clothing, and she shall laugh in the latter day. She hath opened her mouth to wisdom, and the law of clemency is on her tongue. … Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates."
Reflection on the Epistle:
This well-loved passage from Proverbs 31 describes the virtuous woman, and on this day, the Church lifts up St. Anne as a living embodiment of that description. She is the silent root from which the Rose of Sharon the Blessed Virgin Mary would bloom.
Her faithfulness, domestic holiness, and trust in God became the foundation of Our Lady’s Immaculate heart. Although Scripture does not speak much of her life, tradition tells us that Anne and Joachim long suffered the sorrow of infertility, only to be granted the most exalted daughter Mary, conceived without sin.
In St. Anne, we see the power of perseverance, the fruitfulness of holy marriage, and the strength of silent sanctity. Her works have indeed praised her in the gates, for from her womb came the Mother of God, and through her lineage, the Savior entered the world.
The Holy Gospel – Matthew 13:44-52
(A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew)
"At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. Which a man having found, hid it, and for joy thereof goeth, and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field... Again, the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls: who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went his way and sold all that he had, and bought it... Every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like to a man that is a householder who bringeth forth out of his treasure new things and old."
Reflection on the Gospel:
Christ gives us parables about value, sacrifice, and wisdom. He speaks of a man who finds a treasure and sells everything for it and another who gives all for a pearl of great price. What is this treasure but eternal life, and who is the pearl but the Blessed Virgin, through whom the Word was made Flesh?
But today, we look even deeper to the field in which this treasure was buried. That field is St. Anne, the hidden foundation of salvation history. From her concealed life came the pure vessel who bore Christ. She gave her life, her body, and her soul to God, and in return, she was entrusted with raising the Immaculate One.
How many mothers today consider the soul of their child to be the pearl of great price? St. Anne shows us what it means to nurture holiness in silence, obedience, and unwavering faith.
Let us not forget that hidden lives often carry the greatest weight in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Saint of the Day – St. Anne
The name "Anne" comes from the Hebrew “Hannah,” meaning grace. Tradition holds that Anne and her husband Joachim lived in Jerusalem and were of noble lineage. For decades, they suffered childlessness, until, in their old age, God miraculously granted them Mary, who would one day bear the Son of God.
St. Anne is the patroness of mothers, grandmothers, women in labor, and the childless. In a world increasingly detached from family, lineage, and sacred motherhood, St. Anne is a radiant intercessor and model.
She raised Mary with virtue, reverence, and purity preparing her to say Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum — “Let it be done unto me according to thy word.”
Conclusion and Prayer:
Dear listeners, as we meditate on today’s readings, may we remember that sanctity often begins in the home, in the quiet fidelity of mothers and fathers who live in obscurity, but who raise saints. In the life of St. Anne, God shows us the beauty of tradition, of holiness passed down, and the eternal fruit borne by faithful parenthood.
Let us pray.
Concluding Prayer:
O Glorious St. Anne, Mother of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, we ask your intercession this day. You who nurtured the Mother of God in holiness and grace, pray for all mothers, all families, and all the faithful who seek to serve God in silence and strength.
Teach us, like you, to live hidden lives rooted in virtue. May we value the pearl of great price — our Catholic Faith — and may we be willing to give all to attain eternal life.
Through your daughter Mary, and in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.
Prayer for the Restoration of the Mass of the Ages
O God of our Fathers, who raised up countless saints through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered in reverence, awe, and truth, look with mercy upon Thy Church today. Grant us priests who love what is sacred, bishops who defend what is holy, and a pope who restores what has been lost. May the Mass of the Ages once again fill the hearts of Thy faithful and the sanctuaries of Thy temples. Through the intercession of Our Lady, Queen of the Clergy, and Saint Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, restore all things in Christ.
Amen.
